Unit S5 – Media and Reputation

Introduction:

This assignment is designed to check your understanding of the training event you have just attended. The purpose is to collect your views and ideas. Please take your time to record all your thoughts in response to each question. If this scenario did actually occur you would have other people working with you, however, we want to explore your understanding of what needs to be done, whether or not you would be the person taking each action.

We will discuss the responses when we get back together later, after which you will have time to make any changes you want to, before submitting the assignment.

Scenario setting: A 5,600 person, 3-day, customer-facing, conference & exhibition event in a hotel/convention resort in Las Vegas, USA.

Scenario Part 1:

It is 9:30 am on day 2 of the event. The keynote begins in 30 minutes. A colleague approaches you and says ‘I think you should see this’. A friend of your colleague has sent a screengrab of a picture from what the captions states is ‘The Sports Central Bar’ in the hotel. A man, wearing what appears to be accreditation for your event, is being restrained by two security staff. The person looks angry. The caption states ‘someone looks like they have had one too many!!’. Further comments indicate that the person was asked to leave for making offensive comments to the bar staff and then the guards who escorted him from the area.

Scenario Part 2:
At 9:45 am you are approached by the venue security duty manager who asks to speak in private. She tells you that last evening her colleagues were called to the Sports Central bar in the hotel. A member of bar staff spilt the beer of a customer whilst serving him. The customer reported called the bartender a ‘dumb asshole’. The bartender asked him to leave when the customer refused security was called. The guards report that the male was physically and verbally aggressive. He used several racist terms in relation to the guards who were of Hispanic family origin. Eventually the guards persuaded him to leave but only after he had to be physically prevented from returning to his seat. The details of the man have been obtained. He is a Vice President of a partner organization. He is a guest at the hotel but has not been asked to leave. The security manager explains that the incident will be considered as part of the daily management meeting at 14:00 today. In preparation, she will be submitting a report which will include the fact that the guards are very upset by the incident and want positive action to be taken. The security manager finishes by saying ‘all of my guards are not happy about this, it’s not your fault but we need to do something here’.
